I've been in New York since October '03, working at an eco-cultural nonprofit called Green Map System. It's a global program that helps people make maps of ecological and cultural resources, in over 250 cities and towns around the world. I'm interested in urban ecology and eco-design, as well as sustainable food systems. At Dartmouth I spent some time as a geography major, then petitioned to graduate with an interdisciplinary major called Political Ecology. I get around town on a green bicycle.

Director of Operations for the Algebra Project (AP), a national mathematics literacy program for students previously performing in the lowest quartile on standardized exams. We seek to "raise the floor" of mathematics literacy by accelerating the learning of low-performing students, so that they may graduate high school on time in 4 years, and be prepared for credit bearing college courses (without remediation). We believe math literacy is a key to citizenship in the Information Age. The AP is led by SNCC MS Voting Rights Movement veteran Bob Moses, and has an intentionally decentralized multi-generational, multi-racial national network of schools, as well as university and organizational partners. I thank you for embracing the potential of alums for social change. I am a frequently over-committed 50 year old mom & part time history professor who wishes to do more for peace, social justice and environmental health. I am particularly worried about "fracking" - hydraulic fracturing.

I wrote much of this in an 'registration' attempt yesterday, but it didn't respond when I pushed "submit". (I was/am using Safari on a Mac; I'll try another approach).

I'd be happy to learn about DASC events and be on your mailing list. I am a member of Brooklyn Parents for Peace, despite living in Manhattan - are you interested in my forwarding info from it from time to time?

Hello.

I'm an artist and arts administrator/educator currently living in Chicago. I recently graduated with an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and am currently working at Association House of Chicago, a social service agency. I am the Arts Program Coordinator at the Community Center. For many years now, I have been active in the arts community wherever I have lived and worked. I have worked in cultural organizations such as museums, community-based organizations, schools, and art centers. I am interested in hearing from others actively involved in the arts....

I believe art is transformative- it can empower youth and adults with the skills, confidence, and knowledge to actively create art that explores, celebrates, and challenges the community they live in. It is a powerful tool of communication and healing; helping to understand and express our shared fears and joys.

After Dartmouth, I taught for a year and then moved to DC to get a MA in Latin American Studies at Georgetown.
I am currently teaching Spanish and Debate in a semi-rural public high school outside of Fort Worth, Texas. (God has a sense of humor, doesn't she?) I also coach competitive debate and other speech events (prose/poetry/extemp), sponsor the Spanish Club and now, the newly created chapter of Amnesty International. At any rate, as a teacher every day I have a platform (my classroom)from which I can make kids think, open their minds, see things in different ways and hopefully inspire them to act--in order to change their world. I am also working with the Texan Democrats (no, it doesn't have to be an oxymoron :-) and have been very involved with the anti-war coalition, immigration advocate groups, and with several organizations focusing on Latino issues in this area. Although I am in Texas and not in one of the local chapters, please keep me posted and let me know how we can collaborate on different issues.

Education is the pathway out of poverty; but even to reach that pathway, we first need to confront the barriers that complicate and prevent learning: disease and poor sanitary conditions, hunger, lack of shelter and clothing, no jobs or financial resources and gender inequality.

The new book Courageous Souls: Do We Plan Our Life Challenges Before Birth? by Robert Schwartz (www.CourageousSouls.com) explores the premise that we are all eternal souls who plan our lives, including our greatest challenges, before were born for purposes of spiritual growth. The book contains ten stories of people who planned physical illness, having handicapped children, deafness, blindness, drug addiction, alcoholism, losing a loved one, and severe accidents. The information about their pre-birth plans was obtained by four gifted mediums and channels, including one who has the ability both to see and to hear the dialogue we have with one another before were born. The book presents the actual conversations people had with their future parents, children, spouses, friends, and other loved ones when they planned their lives together. For readers, suffering that once seemed purposeless becomes imbued with deep meaning. Wisdom may be acquired in a more conscious manner; feelings of anger, guilt, blame, and victimization are replaced by acceptance, forgiveness, gratitude, and peace.

Author Bio

In a personal session with a medium in 2003, author Robert Schwartz was astonished to speak with nonphysical beings who knew everything about him - not just what he had done in life, but also what he had thought and felt. They told him that he had planned many of his most difficult experiences before he was born. Realizing that a knowledge of pre-birth planning would bring great healing to people and allow them to understand the deeper purpose of their life challenges, he devoted the next three years to studying the pre-birth plans of dozens of individuals. The extraordinary insights that emerged speak to our heartfelt, universal yearning to know . . . why.

Prior to his spiritual awakening, Mr. Schwartz was a freelance journalist for such publications as Life magazine and US News & World Report. He has also worked extensively in the corporate sector in marketing and communications. He holds a BA from Dartmouth College and an MBA from Case Western Reserve University.

I am interested in social change. But unlike most advocates I have focused my energies on animal activism. Yet I have also worked as an anti-war activist, political blogger, and ecological artist. I will support anything that makes our lives here on this planet peaceful and productive. And I would like to network individuals who answer to a similar calling.

Rector of St. Gregory's Episcopal Church in Deerfield, IL, for the past 19 years. Our parish does hands-on as well as financial support for a variety of public/community service and advocacy venues, from a Soup Kitchen in Waukegan to St. Leonard's House, the oldest half-way house for ex-offenders in Illinois. We are also members of Lake County United, a citizen's action group that seeks systemic change by engaging issues with politicians and other power brokers.

I have had very little contact with the College or classmates since graduation but stumbled across this blog in an aimless late-night surf session and recognized, perhaps, an opportunity to communicate with some like-minded people. My political views tend to careen between the political poles from issue to issue (I guess you might call me an independent) but since my ultimate heartfelt goals for civilization call for the sacrifice of our doctrine of unrestrained economic growth as a means for promoting the greater good, I suppose, on the balance, that makes me a progressive.
